Year 6. Unit 1. Nutrition: The digestive system

  • Nutrition is a combination of processes which supply our body with substances and the energy we need to live.
  • The four processes involved in nutrition are:
  1. Digestion
  2. Respiration
  3. Circulation
  4. Excretion
Let's watch these lovely videos about how digestion works!

Some facts you should know about digestion:
  • The digestive system breaks down food into nutrients that our body can use.
  • It normally takes 24 to 48 hours to digest food (in total, from eating to passing through the anus).
  • Digestion begins in the mouth.
  • The mouth, stomach and small intestine digest food.
  • Faeces leave the body trough the anus.
