Year 5. Unit 2. Animals. Seahorses!

 Seahorses
  • Seahorses are an unusual type of fish with a head that looks like a horse’s head.
  • They do not have scales and they swim in an upright position.
  • They are very slow swimmers, but they can quickly change colour, which provides camouflage to protect them from predators.
  • What makes seahorses truly unique is their way of reproducing.
  • Male seahorses have a pouch where the females deposit the eggs. The males then carry the eggs until they hatch as tiny fully-formed seahorses.

What type of animals are seahorses?
- They are fish.

What makes them unique?
- Their way of reproducing.

How do they protect themselves from predators?
- Changing colour, through camouflage.

Who carries the eggs?
- Male seahorses.

Personal question: Have you ever seen a seahorse? Where?

1. Choose one of the seahorses above (see pictures) and draw it.
2. Write a short description of the seahorse.

e.g. My seahorse is orange. His body is thin and long. He is very small. He doesn't have scales, but he has a curly tail.

Year 5. Unit 1. Living things: The microscope

Cells, as some other living things, are so small that we cannot see them with the naked eye. Howewer, we can observe them through a microscope.

A microscope is an instrument with several lenses that make very small objects appear much larger than they really are.
